| REFLECT – Have you ever been thirsty? When you get thirsty, the sight of water is such a relief. But there is another kind of thirst….that feeling of “something missing”…that feeling of—“I can’t quite put my finger on it.” And you go looking for “something”….maybe something material….a new car, a new outfit, or a new experience. And then when you have it, it doesn’t really quite satisfy the way you thought it would. Or maybe, it’s love you are thirsty for…so you go looking for love in relationships…and still, there’s a sense that something is missing.
That’s a spiritual thirst. And the only thing that can quench it is to encounter God in a personal way. Someone wise once said that “infinite longing can only be filled with infinite love.” In this encounter with the Lord, we discover the fulfillment of our heart’s desire for infinite love. Not only do we discover our desire and thirst for God, we also realize how much God loves us and desires to be in relationship with us. Advent draws our attention to this thirst – God’s thirst for us and our thirst for Him. It is a time of preparation and expectant waiting for the coming of Jesus. It is also a time where God comes to meet us in sending us His Son Jesus, to be with us and lead us back to the Father. But we don’t have to wait until Christmas to encounter God in a deeper way. This is something he offers us every single day. “
“‘If you knew the gift of God;’ The wonder of prayer is revealed beside the well where we come seeking water: there, Christ comes to meet every human being. It is he who first seeks us and asks us for a drink. Jesus thirsts; his asking arises from the depths of God’s desire for us. Whether we realize it or not, prayer is the encounter of God’s thirst with ours. God thirsts that we may thirst for him.” (CCC 2560)
